Firefighters Respond to Structure Fire
Sun. Dec 20th 2009

00:18-The fire department was dispatched to 107 Flag Swamp Road for a reported structure fire. First arriving crews found the rear of the two story residential home fully involved. Firefighters began suppression with an interior attack through the front door. While the interior attack team conducted suppression, an exterior crew controlled the fire outside of the building. Resources from mutual aid towns were called to assist. Oxford Fire was called to provide a Rapid Intervention Team, Woodbury Fire aided with a Tanker, Sandy Hook Fire and Rescue stood by covering Center Firehouse on Main Street South, while the Southbury Training School's Engine and crew supplied water to the tankers. The fire was brought under control within 25 minutes. The fire extended to the attic forcing firefighters to perform additional suppression operations. A ventillation team was placed on the roof to cut a large hole which allowed heated gases and smoke inside the building to exit. This tactic provides a safer environment for the firefighters inside the building. The home owners escaped injury and fled the residence after smoke detectors were activated, alerting them of the fire.
