Any resident of the town of Southbury, a resident of an adjoining town or an individual who is employed In the town of Southbury, over the age of eighteen (18), of sound mind and body, desiring admission to Membership in the fire department, shall submit, in writing, an application that is endorsed by two (2) active or life members. The applications shall then be referred to the Recruitment & Retention (R&R) Committee for consideration. The R&R Committee will meet with the applicant to determine if the application should move forward to the Membership Committee. Upon receipt by the Membership Committee a background check will be completed. If satisfactorily returned after the background check, the Membership Committee will present the applicant to the members present at the next regular meeting for their approval.
In the event the applicant receives a positive majority vote of the active members present, the applicant will become an Apprentice Member. The Apprentice Member must complete a physical examination by a physician appointed by the department as needed based upon assigned duties. This physical examination is paid for by the department. Upon written receipt the Apprentice member has passed the examination the applicant shall be assigned active non-firefighting duties, until the Apprentice member completes an entry level fire-fighter training course or other required training based on membership level.
